One-room hotels in Amsterdam, Sweden and New Zealand offer you hotel accommodation minus the neighbours

Looking for somewhere different to stay? Try your very own hotel for size. That's right, one-room hotels — offering the same great service and facilities, just minus all other guests — are on the rise.

Amsterdam's Hôtel Droog ( houses fashion boutiques, an art space and just the one room. In Sweden head 155m underground to a one-room suite in the Sala Silvermine ( where you use an intercom radio to communicate with staff. And for a one-room with a view, The Sounds Retreat ( in Marlborough, New Zealand, has stunning vistas as well as on-call outdoor guides and a private chef. It's the only way to truly escape the crowds.
