Centrally yet quietly located in the heart of W1, this gem of a hotel – with its jaw-dropping suites, slick restaurants and state of the art gym – is the perfect base for exploring the capital. Katherine Knight checks in

THE LOWDOWN:
Situated in leafy Marylebone village, minutes from Oxford Street, Mayfair and Regent’s Park, The Marylebone hotel is the ideal antidote to the hustle and bustle of London. As you step into the polished lobby – with its locally-designed furnishings and artwork from the nearby Rebecca Hossack gallery – you can feel your shoulders drop, as a sense of luxurious comfort and calm envelops you.

The Doyle Collection – the hotel group who own this and a smattering of other high-end hotels – is renowned for its emphasis on classic, understated interiors with a modern twist. The Marylebone’s restaurants – 108 brasserie for all-day dining and 108 pantry, a cafe complete with a juice bar – are typically sleek in design; as is 108 bar, where a cool clientele perch on red leather seats at the zinc-topped bar. Not to mention the spa, 18-metre ozone-treated swimming pool and high-end health club Third Space.

The contemporary-chic vibe continues throughout the 257 rooms; all have deep carpets, comfy beds and Italian marble bathrooms with underfloor heating. But the real wow factor comes in the form of the top-floor Terrace Suites – we’re talking 60-inch TV, mini kitchen, dining room, a huge bathroom (marble, again) and – the pièce de résistance – all-weather terraces. Thanks to their retractable ceilings and outdoor fireplaces, here you can cosy up in one of the faux fur throws and spend an evening watching the world go by, rain or shine.

THE GOOD:
As London hotel locations go, this is pretty unbeatable.

108 brasserie does classic British dishes exceptionally well, all served by an on-the-ball staff.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD:
The spa is small compared to the number of rooms – and it’s imperative to book well in advance.

THE VERDICT:
A stay at this urban hotspot is the perfect way to upgrade a shopping trip in London.
