Five of the best Athens hotels

Stylish, luxurious, cool... Angelina Villa-Clarke picks five of the best hotels in Athens

Fresh Hotel Omonia, Psiri
This place is all about the cool factor with its rooftop bar the Air Lounge. If edgy, contemporary style is for you, you'll love the pink Plexiglas reception and designer furniture. The white balconies on the eighth and ninth floors get the best views of the city.

The Periscope Hotel Kolonaki
Just five minutes from Syntagma Square, the Periscope's 22 rooms feature simple wooden floors, modern furniture and a colour palette of greys, reds and blues, but it's the views through a periscope on the roof and beamed onto screens that steal the show.

O&B Athens Boutique Hotel Psiri
This is a gem of a boutique hotel with just 11 rooms in the bohemian area of Psiri. Ochre & Brown (known as O&B) offers stylish, compact surroundings with nice touches such as WiFi in all rooms and private phone numbers. The staff are fantastically friendly and breakfasts are deliciously fresh and generous.

Astir Palace Bungalows Vouliagmeni
Just 20km from the centre of Athens you'll find the luxurious, secluded 1960s bungalows at Astir Palace (part of the Starwood Luxury Collection Resort). Updated by architects Zege and decorated in natural tones and stripes, each bungalow has sunken tubs and plunge pools, and stunning views of the Saronic Gulf, as well as access to the Arion Spa and five restaurants.

Yes! Hotel Athens
Due to open later this year, the new Yes! Hotel Athens is the first hotel project by the award-winning Brazilian designers the Campana Brothers in collaboration with owner Dakis Joannou. In the former Olympic Palace Hotel, originally built in 1958 by Iasonas Rizos, expect eco-stylish furniture and carefully restored details from the existing building, as well as chairs designed by local art students. We're particularly excited about the vertical garden by Patrick Blanc.
